A supply of brown
packaging paper, packaging tape, markers for addressing packages, and
shipping information from the Post Office, UPS, and Federal Express will
come in handy when you need to ship packages. For convenience, keep
these items with your wrapping supplies.

Mail jams and jellies in plastic containers with
tight-fitting, twist-on lids.

Pack baked goods in popped corn, puffed cereal, or
peanuts—either the unshelled or the polystyrene foam variety.

Ship uncut cookie bars in the pan in which they were baked
to keep them moist and crumble free.

Bake fruit and nut breads in metal food cans. Remove them
from the cans to cool. Wrap the breads in plastic wrap and put them back
into cleaned cans for wrapping and shipping.

Mail packages early
to reduce costly overseas rates and to ensure delivery before Christmas.
The Post Office suggests a deadline of October 1 for surface mail to
Africa, the Middle East, and South and Central America, and November 1
for surface mail to Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Far East, and
Southeast Asia. Check with the Post Office for other suggested mailing
dates.
