A largely bicultural society, New Zealand is home to a population of Pakeha (of European descent) and descendents of Maori settlers from the Polynesian islands. About 80 percent of New Zealanders are Pakeha, but in this parliamentary monarchy within the British Commonwealth, some unique gift-giving customs are distinctly Maori.
