A former colony of France, the western African republic of Cote d’Ivoire still retains much French influence. French is the official language and laws are based on the legal system of France, as well. The majority of the diverse population of more than 60 ethnic groups are either Muslim or Christian, and gift giving customs often are divided along those lines.
