The European descent of the majority of Uruguay’s population makes the country unique in South America, where most nations are home to those of mixed native Indian and Spanish ancestry. Uruguay also has the highest literacy rate in Latin America, and is the continent’s most secular nation. Notwithstanding, Uruguayans observe gift giving customs similar to those of their neighbors.
