The search for a single gift over a decade ago launched the most extensive research project of my life. My husband, Larry, informed me that we had been invited to a birthday party for one of the managers at his office . . . and would I please help select an appropriate gift for her. "Why not," I thought. "After all, there must be a publication somewhere with sound advice on gift-giving etiquette and mile-long lists of proper gifts for people I've never met."

It was the futile search for such a primer that compelled me to "write the book" on gift giving. I introduce this book to you, not as one born with the perfect present in hand, but as one who has lived and breathed the subject of gift giving for the past 20 years. I've learned a good deal in this time and hope you'll be inspired and amused as you read my book.
