Hanukkah, or the Feast of Dedication, is one of the great festivals of the Jewish faith. The tradition began in 165 A.D. when a Hebrew army under Judas Maccabeus defeated the Syrians and recaptured the Temple of Jerusalem. The temple was cleansed and rededicated in a joyous, eight-day ceremony, the triumphant worshippers feasting and lighting numerous candles and lamps to celebrate their victory. |
