Patriarch, father, dad, the one with the remote control. What politician holds a more influential office? What doctor works longer hours? In spite of how deserved they are, presents for Dad are notoriously outlandish, obnoxious, and even (gasp!) tacky. Here, then, are just a few ideas to get you thinking outside the shirt box. |

gift ideas (excerpted from Present Perfect) See also: big boy toys, gifts for men Mothball the old lawn mower and give Dad a contract for lawn service. How about season tickets to a sporting event for which he has a passion? Pamper him with a bounty of shower accessories: A massaging shower head, nonfogging mirror, shower clock-radio, back brush, Turkish towel, and bathrobe. Arrange for a reunion with a former teammate, coach, college roommate, business associate, or friend. Or make a "This Is Your Life" audio or videotape of friends and acquaintances from days gone by. Give Dad a subscription to the hometown newspaper from where he was born, grew up, or lived for a long time—this is a great way for him to keep up with what's happening with old friends. Take him back in time with a collection of trading cards from his youth, a recording of songs from the "good ol' days" (many are now available on compact discs), or a videotape of a favorite old movie. Surprise him with a vacation to a place he has always wanted to visit.
